Dr. Alec Miller is President of the Access Psychology Foundation, Co-Founder of Cognitive and Behavioral Consultants, based in White Plains and Manhattan, and Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine, in Bronx, NY.
Dr. Miller is internationally recognized as a master clinician, treatment developer, researcher, and trainer, specializing in dialectical behavior therapy for self-harming adolescents and those with borderline personality disorder. He and his colleagues have adapted DBT for other mental health disorders, as well as for medical, corporate and school settings. This ground-breaking work has contributed to the implementation of DBT in hundreds of schools on a full continuum ranging from Universal-Classroom DBT to Comprehensive School-Based DBT for students with higher needs. He has co-authored over 100 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters, as well as the three leading textbooks on DBT with adolescents, titled, Dialectical Behavior Therapy with Suicidal Adolescents (2007), DBT Skills Training with Adolescents (2015), and DBT Skills in Schools: Skills Training for Emotional Problem-Solving for Adolescents (STEPS-A) (2016). Upon invitation by the American Psychological Association, Dr. Miller developed a psychotherapy training video titled, DBT for Multi-Problem Adolescents (2007).
From 1995 to 2015, Dr. Miller served as Chief of Child and Adolescent Psychology, Director of the Adolescent Depression and Suicide Program, Associate Director of the Psychology Training, and Professor of Clinical Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, NY.
He has received federal, state, and private funding for his research and has been an invited member of NIMH (National Institute of Mental Health) consensus meetings regarding adolescent suicide. Dr. Miller has conducted over 1,000 lectures and workshops worldwide to both lay and professional audiences. He has received numerous awards and honors, including from the American Psychological Association, the Association of Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies, the International Society for the Improvement and Training of DBT, and the Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology.
As a clinician, Dr. Miller is a practitioner of CBT and DBT and treats adults, adolescents, couples and families in White Plains, NY.
